Uplugged & Unbothered: Oahu
OAHU! I took forever to make this post. Mainly because I was dreading going thru photos and reminiscing on paradise. Being back on the 9 to 5 grind is exhausting. But when things get hectic, it’s nice to remember how I felt when I was in Oahu.
Anyway, I consider this trip self care. I was going through hell. I was unemployed, fresh out of a 5 year relationship and my mental health was rocky. This trip was actually supposed to be for our anniversary. But I’m so happy that I decided to keep the tickets and still go. I brought Cristina with me and we had a blast.

Hawaii is amazing. Beauty really flourishes out there. In the terrain, the waters, the food, and the people. What I really loved was that people really appreciated that beauty. Locals and tourists alike spend all their time outdoors. And it was rare to see people mindlessly scroll on their phones, which is sort of a habit for a majority of us now.

Things to Do
Beach Until You Can Beach No More!
The options are endless but in my opinion, Lanikai is the best beach. Lanikai brings that dreamy, highly saturated postcard from Hawaii to life.
Pillbox Hike
I don’t do hikes. It’s not that I don’t like them, they’re just boring to me. Back home in Atlanta, it’s all trees, maybe a waterfall here and there. But this hike… damn. This was incredible. Every way you turn, the view is a potential screensaver.

Tune out!
Even though we spent a lot of time shooting, we had just enough time to relax, too. There’s so much to do on the island that isn’t your typical tourist trap. I took a relaxing one hour hibiscus soak in the suburbs. We snuck into a few hotels and had spent some time by the pools. We spent time in local markets where we discover fruit we’ve never even had before!
Food.
Oahu has something for everyone! From amazing surf n’ turf off the side of highways to killer acai bowls all over, every diet is covered. We didn’t necessarily seek any places to eat, we just stumbled upon them. Two of my favorite places were ARVO and The Sunrise Shack. Guava pancakes from The Royal Hawaiian are a must! I will say that when you’re downtown, make sure to get a Masala from Leonard’s. Thank me later.
Just Drive.
Pack a towel, grab your swimsuit, roll down the windows, play that bop and hit the road. You don’t need to stay at a 5 star resort to get those killer views. And you definitely won’t see those views if you stay at the beach of your hotel. Kaye and I spent a lot of time driving around the island. We found so many amazing little spots that were so serene and calm, and with no one around! I suggest driving down Kamakammeha Highway. Parts of that highway literally hug the beaches with only a few feet between asphalt and sand. Along that stretch, you can find swings that give the illusion of swinging over the ocean. Don’t leave Oahu without going for a swing.
Oahu reminded me to breathe. I can’t wait to get back out there again.
